We need your help.
The Girl Scout council that Camp Archbald is run by – Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania (GSHPA) – decided not to offer programming or resident summer camp at Camp Archbald for the year of 2018. This leaves thousands of girls in the northern part of the council underrepresented and disadvantaged.
Summer camp and outdoor education allows girls to develop as young leaders and find courage, independence, and confidence within themselves. These are just a few of the very important benefits to be had, and a tremendous amount of research exists to provide evidence for these benefits to young children. The most notable of these are from the American Camp Association regarding the value of camp and the long-lasting benefits that camp has for young girls.
What are funds used for?
We’re glad you asked. Right, now we have two goals for our funding. First, we want to support programming for young girls that are affected by the cut in programming and resources in their area. To do this, we have planned a resident camp program that will take place this summer at Camp Archbald from July 15th to July 20th. More information on this program can be found here.
Second, we want to support the continued maintenance and upkeep of Camp Archbald so that it remains open as a facility for camping and outdoors activities. As Camp Archbald is nearing its one hundredth birthday, there are certain maintenance challenges that come with up keeping a historic property. To help facilitate this maintenance, we will earmark funds specifically for Camp Archbald to be used in maintenance projects and community service projects at the camp.
Our organization’s goals are:
- To promote clear, open, and honest communication between Girl Scout membership and the board and administration of GSHPA.
- To encourage, promote, and provide increased quality programming at the camp.
- To prevent the sale of camp land, to preserve Camp Archbald acreage for Girl Scout use for the safety of all concerned.
- To protect and repair historic Camp properties
- To reach out to alumni and Scouts for assistance in supporting, conserving, and protecting Camp Archbald.
- To plan for the 100th Anniversary of Camp Archbald in 2020.
