SoCA Yearly Calendar (this is a working document and is updated when new events happen, last updated 1/20/20)

All SoCA general meetings are held the 2nd Sunday, every other month. Locations switch between the Factoryville Borough at 161 College Ave. Factoryville, PA 18419, Greater Scranton YMCA at 706 North Blakely Street, Dunmore, PA 18512 or Camp Archbald 100 Camp Archbald Rd. Kingsley, PA 18826.

February 22: Troop Adventure Day 9am – 4pm
Location: Camp Archbald
Cost: Free!

Hosted by GSHPA. Juniors will take part in a variety of activities that camp has to offer. Specific activities will be decided closer to the date of the event and based on the weather. Lunch will be provided and will be cooked outdoors over a fire. If weather does not permit outdoor cooking, a group meal will be made indoors.

Troops attending this event must adhere to the girl-adult ratios outlined in Volunteer Essentials. Individual girls must attend with a parent/guardian. All troops must have at least two unrelated chaperones. Please consider only registering enough adults in order to maintain ratio. Any additional adults will take away from girl spots.

Note: Troops are encouraged to stay the night at camp the evening before or after the TAD event through a property reservation. If you are interested in a property reservation, please contact Member Services at memberservices@gshpa.org.

February 28 – March 1: Juliette Frost Winter Weekend
Location: Camp Archbald
Cost: $35 Includes Saturday meals and Sunday breakfast, lodging and activities

Open to all families, kids and supporters who want to come play in the snow at camp! Not game for snow play? Come relax in the lodge by a nice warm fire, drink hot chocolate and catch up on your favorite winter crafts.

February 29: Troop Snow Day 1pm-4pm
Location: Camp Archbald
Cost: $5 per person

Hey troops! Earn one of the new snow challenge badges. Open to all ages. Be sure to bring your outdoor gear and be prepared to be outside for most of the day. If there is no snow, the event is a no go!

March 28: Badge Day: Daisy Eco Learner Badge
Location: Camp Archbald
Cost: $5 per girl

Hosted by GSHPA. Daisies, learn how to protect the environment before you go outdoors, how to keep living things safe when you walk in nature, and how to protect nature from trash. Troops attending this event must adhere to the girl-adult ratios outlined in Volunteer Essentials. Individual girls must attend with a parent/guardian. Meals not included.

April

April 19: Trail Adventure Badge Day 1-4pm

Open to Daisies and Brownies, girls will earn their Trail Adventure badge. All activities will be outside. Dress accordingly for the weather, bring water bottle and good shoes. Snack will be provided. Get ready to explore the many trails at camp and see what kind of adventurer you are!

May 2: Tents Up! 8am-4pm
Location: Camp Archbald
Cost: Free

Hosted by GSHPA. Join other volunteers to herald in a new summer camping season and help put tents up at Camp Archbald! Lunch will be provided. We also invite guests to stay Friday and/or Saturday night to enjoy camp!

May 9: Volunteer Work Day 9am – 4pm
Location: Camp Archbald
Cost: Free

Hosted by GSHPA. Your help is needed—please join us at Camp Archbald for a work day! We will be cleaning up the camp, painting, and landscaping.

Check in starts at 9:30 AM and work starts at 10:00 AM. You will be assigned a task that day based on your skills. We will work until Noon and then enjoy a provided lunch. We will then return to work until 4 PM.

Work to be performed varies based on the number of participants, weather, and the current needs. In general: seasonal preparation of tents, minor repairs, splitting wood, etc. A confirmation email will be sent out a week prior to the event with more details.

Volunteers are welcome to reserve a campsite to stay Friday or Saturday night!

May 17:
 Adult Enrichment – Archery Level 1 8am – 4:30pm

Location: Camp Archbald
Cost: $35 per person (girl or adult)

Hosted by GSHPA. Train to be a Level 1 Instructor to teach beginner archery programs to people of all ages and abilities. The Level 1 Archery Instructor will learn about range safety, range setup, the steps of shooting, equipment and repair, programs, and lesson plans.

The minimum age for this training is 15 years old. Certification is valid for three years from the date of course completion. A minimum of 6 people are needed in order to run this course with a maximum of 10.

Note: Lunch will not be included in the course fee, so please bring your own. The $35 fee is non-refundable.

May 29 – 31: Greenhorn Level 1 Backpacking at Camp Archbald
Location: Camp Archbald
Cost: $40 per girl
Last day to register – May 15, 2020 – sign up here

Hosted by GSHPA. Girls will learn basic backpacking skills and how to use standard backpacking gear such as water filters and packs. This program builds the skills necessary for a girl to move on to a Level 2 backpacking program. Expect to hike 2-3 miles and sleep outside in tents both nights.

Note: This event is for Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors. A minimum of three participants is needed in order to run this event.

This year, SoCA will be hosting Family Camp, save the date! Open to families of all ages, camp is available for single overnight use camping or for the whole weekend. Not sure about sending your camper to resident camp? Join them and embrace the outdoors together and enjoy activities such as boating, swimming, hiking, campfires and archery.

Volunteers are also needed for the day and weekend to help with cooking and leading activities. Lodging and food is free for facilitators. Interested in helping or want more information? If you have a skill/knowledge that you’d like to offer, get in touch! No certifications are needed if you assist. Volunteer spots needed: swimming, boating, archery, active games, ropes course, climbing tower/zip line, fire building, camp craft lashing, arts and crafts, nature study/hiking, special skills and knowledge, kitchen staff.
