SoCA Yearly Calendar (this is a working document and is updated when new events happen, last updated 3/15/20)

All SoCA general meetings are held the 2nd Sunday, every other month. Locations switch between the Factoryville Borough at 161 College Ave. Factoryville, PA 18419, Greater Scranton YMCA at 706 North Blakely Street, Dunmore, PA 18512 or Camp Archbald 100 Camp Archbald Rd. Kingsley, PA 18826.

January

Complete 10 tasks about Camp Archbald and e-mail or mail the request back for your special edition girl-designed 100th anniversary patch! Our patch was designed by Maddy O. from troop 50774! The boxes include everything you need to complete the activities and takes an average of 2.5 hours to complete, with 3+ hours for younger girls.

April

Open to current Cadette and up Girl Scouts, this event will have girls cook off in a cooking challenge using only cast iron cookware. Girls are given a secret ingredient and have to complete the dish using the ingredient.

Hosted by GSHPA. Join other volunteers to herald in a new summer camping season and help put tents up at Camp Archbald! Lunch will be provided. We also invite guests to stay Friday and/or Saturday night to enjoy camp!

May 3: Resident Camp Open House – 1-4pm

Cost: Free

Come to camp! Whether you are a camp veteran, or a first timer, come and check out camp and spend some time outside. Tours will be offered and girls can see what space they will be spending time in during resident camp. Older girls or adults needed as tour guides! May 17:
 Adult Enrichment – Archery Level 1 8am – 4:30pm

Location: Camp Archbald
Cost: $35 per person (girl or adult)

Hosted by GSHPA. Train to be a Level 1 Instructor to teach beginner archery programs to people of all ages and abilities. The Level 1 Archery Instructor will learn about range safety, range setup, the steps of shooting, equipment and repair, programs, and lesson plans.

The minimum age for this training is 15 years old. Certification is valid for three years from the date of course completion. A minimum of 6 people are needed in order to run this course with a maximum of 10.

Note: Lunch will not be included in the course fee, so please bring your own. The $35 fee is non-refundable.

May 29 – 31: Greenhorn Level 1 Backpacking at Camp Archbald

Cost: $40 per girl

Hosted by GSHPA. Girls will learn basic backpacking skills and how to use standard backpacking gear such as water filters and packs. This program builds the skills necessary for a girl to move on to a Level 2 backpacking program. Expect to hike 2-3 miles and sleep outside in tents both nights.

Note: This event is for Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors. A minimum of three participants is needed in order to run this event.

June

June 1: Registration for resident camp closes

June 6: Small boat training, 9am-5pm
Location: Camp Archbald, waterfront
Cost: $20

Open to anyone at least 18 years old. Expected commitment to help teach campers water safety and the joys of boating safely. Training is for a two-year Small Boat Safety facilitator. Bring your own lunch and drinks for the day. Dress for the weather and plan on being wet so bring extra clothes if needed. Activities will be on the water paddling with life jackets on. If you wear glasses, put a safety strap on them. Water shoes are a great idea as is light weight comfortable clothing.

June 14: General Meeting 1:30-3pm

Raise the 100th anniversary flag with us as we retire the 75th anniversary flag. Girls will learn how to properly retire the American flag and participate in other flag based educational projects. 

July

July 12-17: Resident camp week 1

Open to any former campers, counselors, staff members of Camp Archbald, all are welcome! Reminisce with your old camp buddies and spend the weekend doing all your old favorites: singing, wish boat building, camp photos, campfire and more! Registration info coming soon. 

July 19-24: Resident camp week 2

Cost: Varies per camping option

This year, SoCA will be hosting Family Camp, save the date! Open to families of all ages, camp is available for single overnight use camping or for the whole weekend. Not sure about sending your camper to resident camp? Join them and embrace the outdoors together and enjoy activities such as boating, swimming, hiking, campfires and archery.

Volunteers are also needed for the day and weekend to help with cooking and leading activities. Lodging and food is free for facilitators. Interested in helping or want more information? If you have a skill/knowledge that you’d like to offer, get in touch! No certifications are needed if you assist. Volunteer spots needed: swimming, boating, archery, active games, ropes course, climbing tower/zip line, fire building, camp craft lashing, arts and crafts, nature study/hiking, special skills and knowledge, kitchen staff.

Location: Susquehanna River between White’s Ferry to Appletree boat launches
Cost: $50.00/single kayak, $70.00/tandem or canoe, and $30.00 to bring your own craft. In addition to the above rental/transport fee, a donation to SoCA is strongly encouraged. Download a sponsor sheet (coming soon) or ask for details upon reservation.
